She attended the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens as her father worked as an FBI security liaison officer, and was inspired to take up athletics after watching Moroccan runner Hicham EL GUERROUJ (MAR) win gold in both the 1500m and 5000m.

She grew up on a dairy farm in Montgomery, VT, United States of America. Starting at about 05:00 or 06:00, she would milk between 30 and 40 cows before going to school. She is still based in her hometown, which has a population of about 1200.
