His father Dave Steen, representing Canada, won bronze in decathlon at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, and also competed at the 1984 Games. His mother Andrea Steen [nee Page] competed for Canada in the 400m hurdles at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. His great uncle David Steen won gold for Canada in shot put at the Commonwealth Games in 1966 and 1970. His grandfather Don Steen was the 1956 Canadian decathlon champion and was a coach for the Canadian athletics team at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich.
