POSITIVE POSTPONEMENT
He said he would use the postponement of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo to gain additional weight and reach the higher end of the 97kg category. "I was always a little bit light for my weight class, so I could put on a couple pounds and be a little bit heavier. Work on speed. All the little details. I've never had this much time to focus on one tournament. To have close to a full year to focus on one tournament and beating 16 guys in a bracket has been a lot of fun." (torontosun.com, 24 Mar 2020; cbc.ca, 29 Jan 2021; olympic.ca, 01 Jan 2019)

OLYMPIC CURSE
His father Dave Steen, a former decathlete, was unable to compete at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow after Canada boycotted the event, but went on to compete at both the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games. His great uncle David won two Commonwealth Games gold medals in shot put in 1966 and 1970, but was unable to compete during the 1964 season, including that year's Olympic Games in Tokyo, after contracting mononucleosis. His own Olympic debut at the 2020 Games in Tokyo was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "I look at it as a little bit of a curse. I'm hoping to break the cycle. I just have to keep pushing forward and hope for the best." (torontosun.com, 24 Mar 2020)
