He began representing Poland in 2014. He had previously competed for the Russian Federation, and decided to make the switch after he did not manage to achieve his ambition of competing at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. He was encouraged to switch allegiance to Poland by Yusup Abdusalomov, who had become a coach with the Polish national team in 2013. "I thought about quitting the sport after the 2012 Olympic Games. I had a feeling that no one counted on me. Only two people believed in me - coach Yusup Abdusalomov and my father. Yusup didn't have to convince me much to change nationality. I totally trust him.
