His mother encouraged him to take up weightlifting after he quit gymnastics. "Stopping gymnastics was a big thing for me and mum supported that decision. It was her that suggested I get into weightlifting when she saw [New Zealand weightlifter] Richie [Patterson] competing, and she suggested him as my coach from day one. Mum has always encouraged us [him and sister Olivia] to pursue our passions and believes we can do anything. She tells us we must enjoy it while we are doing it.
