General Interest

General
EARLY DAYS
Born in Auckland, New Zealand, to Tongan parents, he grew up in Tonga before moving back to New Zealand at age 10. "My family was well off in Tonga, but when they came back to New Zealand we kind of struggled for the first 10 years. We wouldn't have enough to eat. We'd get home from school and go straight to sleep. We'd call it 'sleep for dinner'." (odt.co.nz, 09 Oct 2017; slow-journalism.com, 16 May 2020; olympic.org.nz, 04 Jul 2015, 01 Sep 2018)

MENTAL HEALTH CAMPAIGNER
He is a supporter of the New Zealand suicide prevention organisation Live Undefeated. "It's a cause I'm passionate about, because I learnt back when I was in high school that New Zealand has the top rate of suicide in the world, and a lot of that statistic was Tongans actually committing suicide. It's hard for me to hear all these things about my own people and if I can help in a certain way that would be good for me and for them as well." (Olympic Weightlifting New Zealand Facebook page, 06 Jun 2018)

COACHING
He has been an assistant coach at the Olympic Weightlifting gym in Auckland, New Zealand, which was set up by his coach Tina Ball. (strengthhq.co.nz, 14 Sep 2017)
