He trained in boxing for three years, but decided not to pursue the sport any further. He discovered weightlifting when he changed schools at age 15. "My father objected to my joining weightlifting. He knew that at the highest level, the sport was infected with drug use and he was afraid that I would be tempted to also use drugs. About a year ago [2019] I found out that my father and my coach had reached an agreement that my coach would supervise me and would never let me get close to drugs.
