A stress fracture to his right tibia affected him during the 2019 season. A crushed nerve in his back was causing him pain in his left leg which forced him to overcompensate. He could not compete at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, and the injury continued to cause him problems into 2020. (latercera.com, 25 Jul 2020, 02 May 2020; chile.as.com, 09 Nov 2019)
He was affected by a back injury at the 2018 World Championships in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. He was still able to win gold in the snatch competition of the 89kg category at the tournament. He had fully recovered by December of that year, and started training again in January 2019.
