General Interest

General
The Hungarian men's water polo team was for a long time the dominant force at the sport's highest level. They won the first of nine Olympic gold medals in 1932, and claimed three in a row between 2000 and 2008. In 22 Olympic appearances before Tokyo 2020, the team has only failed to win a medal on seven occasions, including at the most recent Games in Rio de Janeiro. In Brazil, the Hungarians were eliminated after losing a penalty shootout to Montenegro in the quarterfinals.

Hungary qualified for Tokyo 2020 after claiming gold at the 2020 European Championship, which was the team's first continental title since 1999 and their 13th overall.

The Hungarian team reached the semifinals at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju, but were defeated 12-10 by eventual champions Italy. They then lost the bronze medal match to Croatia. They last won a world championship title in 2013, and also finished as runners-up in 2017.

They have finished in the top-three in each of their last eight appearances at the World Cup, a run that began in 1993. In that time, they have reached the final seven times and have claimed the title on three occasions, including in 2018.
