He has combined his career in water polo with his commitments working as a director of a financial planning company in Cape Town, a role he started in 2015. "Working a 9am-5pm job, it's difficult to find the time to stay competitively fit. There are a lot of youngsters in the national team set-up who keep me young and on my toes, so it's about making sacrifices and finding the time. Alarms at 4.30am are a common thing in my house to get in some work before the day starts, so it's challenging, but a lot of people open up their facilities for us to train in, which has helped."
