He began water polo in grade four of primary school at the Ksumigaura Swimming School in Tsuchiura, Japan. He took up the sport seriously in grade 10 at Shumei Eiko High School in Ageo, Japan (nittai.ac.jp, 08 Jul 2016; ibarakikokutai2019.jp, 04 Jul 2016)

He had been initially involved in swimming at swimming school, and then tried water polo. He competed in both events until middle school, but he decided to quit swimming when a traffic accident forced him to miss the last competition before he graduated from the school.
