General
Argentina won a bronze medal at the second Olympic Games they contested, in 1988 in Seoul, but they have not made it back to the medal podium in five attempts since. They came closest at the 2000 Games in Sydney, but after a famous quarterfinal win over Brazil, they lost the semifinal 3-1 to the Russian Federation, and then the bronze medal match 3-0 to Italy. In Rio in 2016 they topped Pool B, before failing to replicate their quarterfinal win from 2000 as they lost 3-1 to the host nation.

Their 2016 loss to Brazil made it three consecutive quarterfinal defeats in Olympic competition after a 3-1 defeat by Italy at the 2004 Games in Athens, and a 3-0 defeat by Brazil at the 2012 Games in London. Argentina missed the 2008 Games in Beijing after being upset by Venezuela in the qualifiers. This time around, they booked their spot in Tokyo by defeating Canada, China and Finland to finish top of Pool F at the 2019 Intercontinental Qualification Tournament.

Much like their Olympic history, Argentina's record at the world championship includes a lone medal, bronze in 1982. The closest they have come to a medal since then is 1990 and 2002 when they lost in the quarterfinals. Most recently they exited the 2018 tournament at the second group stage.

At the World League, Argentina's best performance is a fourth-place finish in 2011, and they finished seventh at the Nations League in 2019. They dominated the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, losing just one set on their way to clinching a second consecutive Pan American Games gold.
