EARTHQUAKE DISASTER
His family home in Ishinomaki, Japan, was flooded following an earthquake and tsunami that struck off the Pacific coast of Tohoku in 2011. He was studying at Juntendo University in Tokyo at the time of the earthquake, but his family were forced to stay at a shelter and his father lost his job. He says he considered dropping out of university and quitting volleyball due to the financial burden on his family, but was able to continue because of financial support from the university. "My parents' house is only 100 meters from the beach. I doubted my eyes when I saw the newsreel of the tsunami. I was able to confirm that my family were safe, but it took me a week to reach my hometown. I wasn't in a situation where I could go to college, so I thought it would be difficult to continue playing volleyball. It was a miracle. Thanks to the kindness of the college, I was exempted from paying the tuition fee and I was able to continue playing volleyball, so I owe them everything that I am now."
