GOLD COAST COMEBACK
He won a silver medal in the men's triathlon at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, QLD, Australia, despite being 18th coming out of the water and around 30 seconds behind the lead pack at the transition off the bike. He said his background in distance running helped him chase down all but one of his competitors. "[After the bike leg] I honestly thought I'd be struggling to finish in the top 10 or top eight, [but] I'd say I'm probably one of the best runners in the sport. I thought I'd be able to close the gap, I didn't expect to pull that many back, I guess, and run my way to second." (thewest.com.au, 05 Apr 2018; news.com.au, 05 Apr 2018)

MISCALCULATION
At the 2017 World Series event in Edmonton, AB, Canada he finished second after misjudging the number of laps. He sprinted ahead of Mario Mola on the second-to-last lap, but as he crossed the finish line he realised there was still one lap to go. He jumped over the fencing to rejoin the race, and held on to finish second behind Mola. "I got to the front a little too easy and I started to really doubt myself. I had to hurdle over that barrier to get back into it [the race] and suffer it out for a whole other lap, but thankfully the damage was not too much. I dug really deep. I had to resurrect something after that mishap." (stuff.co.nz, 30 Jul 2017)
