He competed in athletics growing up and won 11 junior national titles, including a number of long-distance events. In 2012, at age 17, he won the world cross-country school championships in Malta. He competed at the 2013 World Cross-Country Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, and has competed at the duathlon junior world championships.
