He began playing tennis at age three in kindergarten. He then joined the Trigona club in Moscow, Russian Federation. "I think that around age 14, I began to understand that I wanted to be a professional tennis player and build a career in sport." (gq.ru, 26 Feb 2019)

"I started playing tennis from an early age. I was also tall for my age [like his father who played volleyball]. I even played basketball for the school team. But most of all I liked playing tennis, and my parents did not even try to enrol me in volleyball or basketball." (gq.ru, 26 Feb 2019)

RUSSIAN REVIVAL
He says he hopes to help restore the popularity of tennis in the Russian Federation and inspire a new generation of Russian tennis players. "When I was still a child, Russian tennis was at its peak, it was incredibly popular. I watched the then Russian stars - Marat Safin, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Mikhail Youzhny. At some point, it seems to me, tennis in our country subsided a little, people paid less attention to it, and now there are fewer very popular and successful players. But I think now the popularity of the sport is returning to its peak. Soon it will have as many fans again as it did 10 years ago [speaking in 2019]. I am very pleased when children come up to me and say how I inspire and motivate them, that they want to be like me. Even the fact that they simply want the same racket, uniform, sneakers. They follow my career and learn from me. I hope that I will continue to motivate the guys and attract the attention of all Russians to tennis. I hope that with my victories I will be able to return tennis to its former status." (gq.ru, 26 Feb 2019)
