He made a slow recovery after the injuries he suffered in a car accident in 2001. "For about half a year I couldn't walk normally. Then I started to walk, picked up the racket, and after two years, I played some small, local tournaments in Russia. I won some of them, and my mother said, 'let's try, keep going, maybe we can play'. I wasn't thinking about playing on this level, just to try to play some Futures, maybe some local tournaments.
