She took up the sport at age eight at a local club. (Athlete, 06 Aug 2010)

Her grandfather took her to a local club to learn how to defend herself, and also to keep her out of trouble. "I was quite naughty when I was younger and he wanted to get me interested in something more productive. He took me down to the local leisure centre and it was by chance that it was taekwondo that I took up. As a kid I learnt a semi-contact style just for fun, but when I saw the Beijing [2008] Olympics on the TV and athletes getting gold medals, I thought, 'Wow, I want one of those!' So I changed to full-contact style when I was 14 or 15. I had a really fast journey, I was only actually training professionally for two years before competing in the [2012] Olympics." General Interest

General
MAINTAINING WEIGHT
She has competed at the same weight class, -57kg, for her whole senior career, and says managing this has become increasingly difficult as she has grown older. "It has got harder and harder, being 17 years old and being 57 kilograms is okay, but now I'm a 27-year-old woman and I've still got to make that same weight category. Over time I've put on muscle and naturally you put on a bit of fat as well, and it's made it mentally harder because when I was a kid I could do what I wanted, whereas now I have to be strict and I have to lose about six kilograms to make that weight. It is tough, but I just see it as part of that sacrifice to win the gold medal and it's just what I have to do." (insidethegames.biz, 01 Jul 2020)

AIMING FOR THIRD, FOURTH OLYMPIC TITLE
After winning her first world title in 2019, she said she is focusing on winning a third Olympic gold medal in 2020 and is even considering a fourth Olympic gold in 2024 in Paris. "I have been dying to win this [world] title, it's the one that has got away so it just feels amazing. I know I'll be able to retire happy one day, but this win makes me feel I've got so much more to give and achieve. I want to be a legend and no one has ever won three Olympics in a row, so that's the target [in 2020]. It is a hard one but I reckon if I did get gold [in Tokyo], why not try and go for four? Hopefully I can do that and it would be the ultimate dream." (bbc.com, 20 May 2019; teamgb.com, 18 May 2019; bbc.com, 18 May 2019)

TELEVISION APPEARANCES
She has appeared on British television shows 'The Jump' and 'Celebs Go Dating'. "I've been training since I was a kid and haven't had a childhood or normal teenage years, so I think it's important to do things outside of sport. We spend most of our time in an athlete bubble. The Jump was the first show and it was a bit nuts being in the celeb lifestyle, but I truly enjoyed the challenge. Celebs Go Dating was definitely one of the hardest things I've ever done and totally out of my comfort zone, but it's taught me a lot of life lessons." (bbc.co.uk, 19 Oct 2018)
