RETIREMENT AND COMEBACK
She announced her retirement following the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where she lost in the -49kg category quarterfinals after winning Olympic gold in 2008 and 2012. She gave birth to a daughter in July 2017, but six months later she announced she was returning to training and that she hoped to compete at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "I've often been asked why I decided to return after giving birth to my daughter in 2017. I made that decision not to prove anything. I just still feel like being an athlete, purely out of love for the sport. Actually I had been thinking about this [comeback] since Rio. I couldn't forgive myself in 2016. I couldn't get past it. I couldn't accept that I was not as good as I used to be. Then I had my baby girl. Our communication helped me [learn] how to tolerate failure and how to talk to others. I was not good at communicating with teammates before that, because I was always kind of bossy. My baby got me to realise that's not how you communicate. You need to try to be in others' shoes." (sports.xinhuanet.com, 04 Feb 2019; news.cgtn.com, 07 Dec 2020; chinadaily.com.cn, 09 Dec 2020)
