General Interest

General
The United States of America have competed at all three Olympic tournaments to feature the women's team event, and earned a place at their fourth Games by beating Canada to the North American berth at the Olympic qualification event held in Rockford, Illinois, in 2019.

The US team have not progressed beyond the opening round at the last two Olympic competitions. In Rio in 2016 they were drawn against Germany who won 3-0 and went on to claim silver, while they also lost to the eventual silver medallists at London 2012, going down 3-0 to Japan in the first round. The US team's best Olympic performance was the 2008 Games in Beijing, where they reached the bronze medal play-offs and finished ranked equal fifth overall.

Historically the US team won world titles in 1937 and 1949, and were runners-up in 1936, but they have struggled to contend at the world championships ever since. At the 2018 edition they finished ranked equal 12th, which tied with 1989 and 2008 for their best effort at the tournament since the 1949 triumph.

At continental level the US team are regular podium finishers. They won gold at the 2019 Pan American Championships over Brazil and claimed bronze at the 2019 Pan American Games, which followed their sixth title at the Games in 2015.
