General Interest

General
Chinese Taipei are returning to the Olympic Games for the second time after making their first appearance in 2016. They were one of nine teams to qualify through the 2020 World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Gondomar, Portugal.

At the 2016 Games, Chinese Taipei were knocked out in the first round by Hong Kong, China. After Cheng I-Ching won the first singles match for Chinese Taipei, they lost the next three contests and were defeated 3-1.

Chinese Taipei have regularly competed in the top division of the world championships in recent years, although they have often fallen just short of contending for honours. In their five appearances between 2010 and 2018, they finished ranked inside the top 10 four times. This included a semifinal appearance in 2016 when they were beaten by the Chinese team, which was their best performance at the tournament since finishing as runners-up in 2000.

Chinese Taipei compete in a formidable continental field, but at the 2019 Asian Championships they produced a strong showing and were beaten semifinalists against Japan. It was the furthest they had progressed at the tournament since claiming silver in 2000. They reached the quarterfinals at the 2014 and 2018 Asian Games, and have not finished on the podium at that tournament since bronze in 1966.
