General Interest

General
Singapore were one of nine teams to book a place in Tokyo via the 2020 World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Gondomar, Portugal, and are making their fourth appearance at the Olympic Games.

Having won silver in Beijing in 2008 and bronze at London 2012, the 2016 Games in Rio was the first time Singapore failed to finish on the Olympic podium. After a 3-0 defeat to perennial Olympic champions the People's Republic of China in the semifinals, they lost 3-1 to Japan in the bronze medal match in Rio. Four years earlier in London they also lost to Japan, in the semifinals, before dispatching the Korean team in the bronze medal match. At the first Games to feature team events in 2008 in Beijing, Singapore were beaten in the final by their Chinese hosts.

Singapore are the only team apart from People's Republic of China to have won a world championship title from 1993 to 2018, which they achieved in 2010 when they upset the Chinese team 3-1 in the final in Moscow. Singapore finished runners-up behind the Chinese at the world championships in 2008 and 2012, and won bronze in 2014. More recently, Singapore lost a tight round of 16 match to Ukraine 3-2 at the 2018 World Championships in Halmstad, Sweden.

Singapore won gold at the first four Commonwealth Games to feature table tennis from 2002 to 2014, and claimed silver in 2018 behind India. At the Asian Games, where they face more challenging opposition, they won silver or bronze medals at four consecutive Games from 2002 to 2014 but were knocked out of the quarterfinals by Republic of Korea at the 2018 Games in Indonesia. In 2019 they were beaten semifinalists at the Asian championships, where they have not won a medal since bronze in 2013.
