General Interest

General
Germany are the reigning Olympic silver medallists, and qualified for their fourth Olympic tournament by winning gold at the 2019 European Games in Minsk.

At Rio 2016 the German team defeated the United States of America and Hong Kong, China before a 3-2 semifinal victory against Japan. They were then beaten 3-0 by the People's Republic of China in the gold medal match. The result followed a trend of gradual improvement for the Germans, who failed to win a match during the group stage at the 2008 Games in Beijing, and then lost in the quarterfinals to Japan at the 2012 Games in London.

After winning their second world championship title in 1939, German teams were absent from the world championships until the Federal Republic of Germany took part in 1987. Following reunification, Germany have won two medals at the tournament, bronze in both 1997 and 2010. At the 2018 World Championships they lost 3-2 in the round of 16 to Austria, and finished ranked equal eighth.

German teams have had more success at continental level. They beat Romania to triumph at the 2019 European Games, in a successful defence of their title in 2015 when they defeated the Netherlands in the final. They lost to Portugal in the quarterfinals of the 2019 European Championships, a tournament they won three times in a row from 2013 to 2015.
