General Interest

General
Austria are making their fourth appearance at the Olympic Games. They were one of nine teams that secured a ticket to Tokyo at the 2020 World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Gondomar, Portugal.

In Rio at the 2016 Games, the Austrian team won their first round match 3-1 against the Netherlands, before being beaten 3-0 in the quarterfinals by eventual bronze medallists Japan. In 2012 Hong Kong, China defeated them 3-1 in the opening round, while in Beijing four years earlier they lost to Japan in the bronze medal play-offs.

Austria had their most successful period at world championship level in the mid-20th century, when they won silver in 1951 and claimed bronze in 1953, but they have not won a medal since then. They reached the quarterfinals at the 2018 World Championships where they were beaten by the dominant Chinese team to finish ranked equal fifth overall. It was their highest finish at the tournament since 1953.

Austria were knocked out of the 2019 European Games in the quarterfinals, while they did not progress from the group stage at the 2019 European Championships. Their last continental medal was silver at the European championships in 2014.
