Chinese Taipei will make their third Olympic appearance in Tokyo, following campaigns in 2008 and 2016. They were one of nine to secure a ticket to Tokyo at the 2020 World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Gondomar, Portugal.

At the 2016 Games in Rio, Chinese Taipei were eliminated 3-1 in the opening round by eventual bronze medallists Germany. They fared better in Beijing eight years earlier, winning two of three group matches before losing to Hong Kong, China in the first round of the bronze medal play-offs.

Chinese Taipei reached the last 16 at the 2018 World Championships in Halmstad, where they were eliminated by hosts Sweden. In Tokyo in 2014, they made their first world championship semifinal appearance, and were beaten by the People's Republic of China.

Continentally, Chinese Taipei face tough competition from their Asian rivals, but they are consistent medal winners. They have won two silver and 10 bronze medals in 12 Asian championship appearances from 1996 to 2019. They have also reached the semifinals at five of the last six Asian Games.
