General Interest

General
Slovenia are competing at their first Olympic Games. They were one of nine teams to secure a ticket to Tokyo at the 2020 World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Gondomar, Portugal.

At the 2018 World Championships in Halmstad, Sweden, the Slovenian team equalled their best ever result at the tournament. They entered the competition in the championship division and won matches against Egypt and Poland to place 17th overall, which matched their previous best ranking from the 2000 edition.

Slovenia have become medal contenders at continental level in recent years. They reached the semifinals at the 2017 European Championships in Luxembourg, where they were beaten 3-2 by Germany to claim bronze. It remains their best performance at the tournament as of the 2019 edition, where they lost in the quarterfinals to Germany once again. Prior to 2017, they had never finished the tournament ranked inside the top 10.
