General Interest

General
Germany qualified for the 2020 Games in Tokyo by winning gold at the 2019 European Games in Minsk. The team are three-time medallists at the Olympic Games but are still searching for gold after winning silver in 2008 and bronze in both 2012 and 2016. In Rio de Janeiro they defeated Chinese Taipei in the first round before beating Austria in the quarterfinals. They then lost to Japan in the semifinals and went on to face the Republic of Korea in the bronze medal match, which they won 3-1.

The German team are also yet to win a world title, despite claiming four silver medals at the world championships since 2010. On all four occasions, they were beaten by the People's Republic of China in the final, most recently at the 2018 edition in Halmstad, Sweden.

It is a different story at continental level. Germany have dominated the European championships in recent years, winning eight gold medals between 2007 and 2019.
