His parents and grandparents played table tennis. "I was lucky to find very good coaches in the beginning who already had experience with professionals - Horst Bitsch, Elisabeth Grujic who is the wife of the Serbian international Slobodan Grujic, and Wolfgang Boll, Timo's father, all trained me in Hochst. From there things went quickly, in 2000 I was accepted onto the state team, and in 2002 I was invited to train with the national programme." (Facebook page, 17 Mar 2020)

Coming back from two sets down to beat Chinese player Fan Zhendong at the 2019 Australian Open. "When I pulled level at 2-2, I believed for the first time that I could beat a really good Chinese player. That's a feeling that I hadn't had before. When I won, I believed that I could beat other Chinese players as well. It gave me a lot of confidence." (nrz.de, 04 Sep 2019; DTTB YouTube channel, 20 Aug 2019)
