General Interest

General
Egypt are making their second appearance at the Olympic Games, following their Olympic debut in London in 2012. They qualified for Tokyo by winning gold at the 2019 All-Africa Games in Rabat, Morocco.

The Egyptian team are still seeking their first victory on the Olympic stage, having been eliminated 3-0 in the first round in London by Austria.

In world-level competition, Egypt have found it tough to make an impression. At the 2018 World Championships in Halmstad, Sweden, they entered the tournament in the championship division, but were unable to win a match in the group stage before being beaten by the Russian Federation in the knockout round. As of 2018 they are yet to finish a world championship tournament ranked inside the top 20.

At continental level it is a different story, as the Egyptian team beat Nigeria in the final at the 2019 All-Africa Games to claim their third gold medal from the last four editions of the Games. Egypt and Nigeria have historically been the two dominant African teams, and in 2018 Nigeria defeated Egypt in the final of the Asian championships to prevent Egypt securing a fifth consecutive Asian championship title.
