General Interest

General
Croatia will make their second Olympic appearance in Tokyo, having previously appeared at the first Games to feature the team event in 2008. They were one of nine teams to book their place in Tokyo through the 2020 World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Gondomar, Portugal.

At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, the Croatian team progressed to the bronze medal play-offs after winning two of three group stage matches. They lost to Austria 3-0 in the first round of the play-offs.

On the world stage Croatia's performances have improved in recent years. At the 2018 World Championships in Halmstad, Sweden, they reached the last 16, where they were beaten 3-2 by Brazil. It was their third consecutive round of 16 appearance at the world championships, and the third consecutive time they finished ranked inside the top 10, something they had failed to achieve in nine previous appearances at the tournament dating back to 1995.

At the 2019 European Championships in Nantes, France, the Croatian team were eliminated in the group stage, while they lost in the quarterfinals to Sweden at the 2019 European Games. They won their last continental medal [bronze] at the 2014 European Championships.
