Tokyo will mark the fourth consecutive Olympic appearance for Hungary in the women's 4x200m freestyle relay. On their debut appearance at Beijing in 2008, they made the final and finished sixth. Four years later in London, they missed qualification for the final by just 0.02 seconds behind Japan. They returned to the Olympic final in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, but could not improve on their result from 2008, again finishing sixth.

Hungary have contested the event four times at the world championships, finishing fifth in 2011 and sixth on every other occasion, including in 2019. Hungary have twice been European champions in the event, and finished second at the most recent edition in 2021.
