General
The Netherlands have competed in the 4x100m freestyle relay at 21 Olympic Games and won medals in 12 of those appearances. Their total medal tally in the event is only bettered by the United States of America, who have won 22 medals prior to Tokyo.

The last time a Netherlands team failed to qualify for the final in this event was at the 1968 Games in Mexico City. Four of the most recent five Games have seen the team make the podium, including silver at the 2012 Games in London, and gold in 2008 in Beijing. The 2008 gold was their second, after also taking the title at the 1936 Games in Berlin.

The Netherlands followed up their Beijing gold by taking their first world championships titles in the event at the 2009 and 2011 editions. Since then, they have added three more medals at the world championships, a silver and two bronzes, but were relegated to fourth at the most recent edition of the event in 2019.
