RETIREMENT THOUGHTS
She struggled with her mental and physical health at the end of 2017 and thought about retiring from the sport. Both her shoulders were overworked, she struggled with the move to Eindhoven and her final exams at high school, and the pace of her career took its toll. "I just kept going. From race to race and when others had holidays after a tournament, I had to go back to school. You know that feeling when you're somewhere and can really only think 'if only I were home?' I couldn't take it anymore physically and mentally. I didn't know if I wanted to continue swimming. I even got a job serving in a restaurant, just to see if that was it. I still have a hard time sometimes. I have lost a lot of confidence. I don't know where it went wrong. The sports psychologist tells me to report it sooner if it gets tough. I'm really good at keeping things to myself. But now I know that pitfall." Despite the struggles she faced, the love for the sport remained.
