France's time of 7:07.24 at the European championships in May 2021 earned them a place in Tokyo, despite missing the 2019 World Championships where the first 12 qualifiers were determined. They have won three Olympic medals from 20 appearances, most recently claiming silver at the 2012 Games in London behind the dominant US team. They also secured back-to-back bronze medals in 1948 and 1952. At Rio 2016 they swam the 13th-fastest time in the heats, which represents their lowest ever ranking at the Games.

The French team have won one world championship medal, silver at the 2011 edition in Shanghai. They have not competed at the last two world championships, most recently placing 11th in 2015.

At the European championships in May 2021 they finished fourth in the final, behind bronze medallists Italy. They last won a European championship medal [bronze] in 2010.
