Australia have won a total of eight medals in 19 appearances in the men's 4x200m relay at the Olympic Games. Their two gold medals at the Games both came on home soil, in 1956 in Melbourne and 2000 in Sydney. They claimed silver at the 2004 Games in Athens and bronze four years later in Beijing, but have not finished on the Olympic podium since then. In 2016 in Rio they finished fourth behind Japan. In more than 100 years of Olympic participation in the event, the Australians have only failed to reach the final on two occasions since their debut at the 1920 Games, and only the US team's 24 Olympic medals in the event is higher than Australia.

The Australian team are the current world champions in the event, finishing 0.96s ahead of the second-placed Russian team at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju. Their gold medal in Gwangju was the fastest time the Australian team had ever swum the event at an Olympic, Commonwealth Games or world championship tournament, and was their fourth world title after claiming three in a row at the 1998, 2001, and 2003 editions of the tournament.
