Greece booked their ticket to Tokyo with one of the four fastest times among teams that did not qualify through the 2019 World Championships. They are competing at their third Olympic Games in the event, after appearances in 1988 and 2016. Five years ago in Rio, they swam the 15th-fastest time in the heats and did not make the final. They ranked 23rd overall at the 1988 Games in Seoul.
At their most recent world championship appearance in 2017, the Greek team did not manage to qualify for the final after swimming the 14th-fastest time in the heats, and finished with the same ranking at the 2015 World Championships.
At continental level, they came closest to a European championship medal in 2016, when they placed fourth with a time just 0.29s slower than bronze medallists Hungary. At the European championships in May 2021 in Budapest, they were the 14th-fastest team in the heats.
