General Interest

General
France qualified for Tokyo by recording one of the four fastest times among teams that did not qualify at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju. They did not compete in Gwangju or at the 2017 World Championships, having won bronze at the previous edition in 2015 and gold at the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona, which is their only world title in the event.

France are yet to win a medal at the Olympic Games. They have made 12 Olympic appearances in the event since 1960, including every Games since 1980, recording a highest placing of fifth [1980, 1992, 2004]. At both the 2012 and 2016 Games, they failed to qualify for the final after swimming the 10th-fastest time in the heats.

They arrive in Tokyo following a fifth-place finish at the European championships in May 2021. They did not compete at the previous European championships in 2018, but finished second at both the 2014 and 2016 editions behind Great Britain.
