General Interest

General
France made their Olympic debut in the men's 4x100m freestyle relay at the 1964 Games in Tokyo, where they were disqualified in the final. The French team did not win their first medal, a silver, until their ninth appearance at the Games in 2008 when they finished eight hundredths of a second behind the United States of America in the final.

Four years later at London 2012, France turned the tables to beat the US team to gold by nearly half a second, and became only the fourth nation to have finished ahead of the US team in the event at the Olympic Games. The London 2012 result was also the first time a French team had won Olympic gold in a swimming relay event. However, France had to settle for silver once again in 2016 as the United States of America returned to winning ways in Rio de Janeiro.

France claimed back-to-back gold medals at the world championships in 2013 and 2015, becoming the first European team to defend the title in the event. The French did not compete in the event at the 2017 World Championships, and finished last in the final at the 2019 edition of the tournament in Gwangju.
