General Interest

General
Australia became the first team to deny the United States of America the gold medal in the men's 4x100m relay at the Olympic Games with victory in Sydney in 2000. The Australian team, featuring a 17-year-old Ian Thorpe, set a world record to claim their only Olympic gold medal in the event.

Australia have won a total of six Olympic medals in the 4x100m relay, which is second only to the United States of America on 12. The Australians won bronze medals in 1964 and 1968, silver in 1984 in Los Angeles, and then bronze again in both 2008 and 2016.

Australia won world championship gold medals in 2001 and 2011. The team missed the podium at the three editions of the tournament to take place between 2013 and 2017 before finishing third at 2019 World Championships in Gwangju.
