She competed in highland dancing at junior national level events in Canada. "Dancing gave me a lot of body awareness and strength before swimming. That really helped me when I was first learning how to swim." (swimming.ca, 04 Jul 2019; mbhighlanddance.com, 14 May 2014)

She took up swimming at age seven. (cscm.ca, 01 Jan 2017)
:
"I started swimming at age seven, with the I Can Swim programme. From lessons I went to being competitive. As a kid I had one instructor who said I could be really good, but didn't know until 13 or 14 that I was good at breaststroke. I started highland dance when I was four or five. I always hated swimming as a kid, but stopped hating it and started liking it when I won my first provincials or something." (cscm.ca, 08 Dec 2016)

General Interest

General
STAYING IN CANADA
She said she preferred to stay in Canada after graduating high school, rather than swimming in the US collegiate system. In 2016 she began swimming for the University of Manitoba. "When I was in grade 12, I was looking into schools, mostly in Canada because I wanted to stay in Canada. I knew the NCAA route wasn't for me. I just really enjoy living at home and I have so much support here from my family and parents. There was also a programme in Canada that I liked and I've just made some really good connections with my coach, the strength and conditioning coach, and like my massage therapist. I don't think I could have left all that." (swimmingworldmagazine.com, 18 Mar 2020; news.umanitoba.ca, 03 Apr 2017; globalnews.ca, 19 Dec 2016)

LONG-TIME COACH
She joined the University of Manitoba's junior swimming programme in the 2006/07 season. She first met coach Vlastik Cerny at age 10. "Vlast and I, I thought our relationship was good in previous years, but this year [speaking in 2020] it has gotten so much better. We've really talked about sticking with the process and taking each day as it comes, and still giving my best every day." (gobisons.ca, 05 Mar 2020; canadawest.prestosports.com, 08 Dec 2015)
