She learned to swim at the City of Chester Swimming Club in England, and began taking the sport seriously at age 13 at Wirral Metro Swimming Club in England. "I always have to point out how late I started swimming. So I wasn't learning to swim and thinking, 'Oh I want to be an Olympian'." She was inspired to pursue the sport competitively by the 2012 Olympic Games in London. "I just remember that I didn't really enjoy it at the start. For a while, I would try to do other sports instead of swimming - but my mum said, 'You need to learn to swim'. It wasn't until the 2012 Games that I saw an actual Olympics and thought I'd really like to do that. I remember looking at the crowd and how many people were there. I thought it looked amazing and I would love to do that." (britishswimming.org, 18 Mar 2021; scotsman.com, 29 Apr 2021)

EARLY DAYS
Despite her father being a swimming coach, as a child she was initially unsure about pursuing the sport and often tried to avoid getting in the pool. "I learnt to swim as a young kid but I had a love-hate relationship with it. At times, I'd try any sport to avoid swimming - I'd try athletics, netball, basketball, anything really to not have to swim. For quite a while I'd get into swimming and then after a few months I'd stop and have a period away from the sport, then six months later I'd want to try it again and go back to the pool. When I raced, I normally managed to do quite well but in training, I was always far behind, I'd be getting lapped. There were swimmers three years younger than I was ahead of me so I struggled with that. I didn't take it quite as seriously, but when we moved to Wirral Metro [Swimming Club], with it being a 45-minute drive to get there, I did take it more seriously, and that's when I started to enjoy it more. I made my first nationals at Wirral. Seeing the bigger meets, that helped me to start loving it a lot more." (heraldscotland.com, 03 Apr 2021; britishswimming.org, 18 Mar 2021)
