FURTHER STUDIES
While studying for a master's degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Bath in England, he decided to defer his second year of study in 2020 in order to concentrate on the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. (tomdean.online, 27 Apr 2021)

DISRUPTED YEAR
During 2020 he contracted COVID-19 twice, taking three weeks out of the pool each time. The second time, he had a severe case and had to take an additional three weeks to build up his strength again. Despite this he still believes that the preparation and year long delay will be of benefit to him at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "My mindset quickly turned to the positives I could take from the delay. Fortunately I am only 20 and at the start of my career. Swimmers tend to peak around 22, 23 so [coach] Dave said the delay could even prove a blessing in disguise as I will be another year closer to the pinnacle of my career when the Games come around.
