He played Gaelic football, football, basketball and tennis until a broken leg in high school made him focus on swimming. "After I broke my leg in high school it rekindled my interest in swimming as it was the first sport I could get back into." (spreaker.com, Apr 2020; independent.ie, 09 Dec 2019)

General Interest

General
FOCUS ON SWIMMING
At age 22 he decided to defer his sports science degree at University College Dublin in Ireland and move to the National Sports Campus in Abbotstown, Dublin, to train full-time with the hope of qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "You're a bit hesitant telling people, but in swimming if you only put half into it you're not going to get anything out of it. You have to completely throw yourself into it. I was a late bloomer but I said I might as well give it my all, then at the end of the day you can say you gave it everything rather than saying, 'what if?'" After specialising in the 50m breaststroke [a non-Olympic event] in college, he switched to the 100m and 200m breaststroke events. He earned his spot at the Games in Tokyo at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju, Republic of Korea. (spreaker.com, Apr 2020; independent.ie, 09 Dec 2019)
