He began swimming at age 10 after going on holiday with family friends, whose daughter was in a swimming club. He lost his swimming goggles before his first competition and had to borrow 'granny goggles' from a friend. "A friend's mother sometimes went swimming and was able to lend me her goggles. They were old, like granny goggles. But she saved me, even if I jumped into the pool and they immediately filled with water. Those goggles allowed me to swim in my first competition." The first time he swam under two minutes in the 200m freestyle. "I can still remember the feeling when I touched the pad. I later bought photographs of myself celebrating and that was a really nice moment that I remember fondly. I still look at those photographs.
