General Interest

General
STUDYING IN THE UNITED STATES
He moved to Western Kentucky University [WKU] in the United States of America in the 2013/14 academic year, and represented WKU for two seasons. In 2015/16 he moved to the University of Missouri, where he also swam for two seasons before returning to Germany in 2017. In 2016 he became the first University of Missouri swimmer to win an NCAA title when he claimed the 100 yard breaststroke title. In addition to his 100 yard breaststroke national title he also finished third in the 200 yard breaststroke the same year, to own the two highest finishes by a University of Missouri male swimmer in the programme's history. "They [Missouri] had an upcoming programme and had success with breaststroke swimmers. When I got there, I had fun swimming again, because you are a team. And training is like a competition. You can't hide, every day you have to give your best. And that leads to an improvement." SWIMMING COUPLE
He has been in a long-term relationship with German swimmer Nadine Laemmler since around 2010. She also studied at Western Kentucky University for two seasons in 2013/14 and 2014/15 before moving to the University of Missouri in 2015/16 with him. "At times it is a challenge being with another athlete. We want to have a life outside sport, but if one of us suggests we go out, then the other might say 'I am too exhausted'. Of course, that can lead to some unhappiness at time. But at the same time, it also helps because the other person knows how you feel, as they have felt the same at times." (Sportlerherzen YouTube Channel, 14 Jul 2019)

OCCUPATION
He is an industrial engineer, and works for a new energy company. "Engineering is life." (Instagram profile, 31 Jan 2020; Linkedin profile, 01 Jan 2020)
