His mother was a swimming instructor and she put him in the water at an early age. "My mother was a coach and she made me do my first plunge into the water at age three months old. Since then I have been very passionate for water. When I was one year old I already was swimming." He then combined swimming with judo up until age 13. "I earned a green belt, but it's a contact sport and once I got injured. My swimming coach told me that I needed to choose. As I always have been passionate for swimming I chose the water." He does not consider his relatively short height to be a disadvantage against taller swimmers. "The guy who is 1.90m has an advantage because of the arm span. I would do 30 strokes in a 50m-pool, and he would do fewer than that. The strength he applies is less than mine because my stroke has to be bigger to reach the same speed and displacement. But I think that all that can be trained. No matter how disadvantaged might I be in terms of height, my basics and training can shorten this difference by swimming.
