In March 2020 he sustained a medial collateral ligament injury to his left knee during a competition in Australia. (raglanchronicle.co.nz, 15 May 2020)

He began surfing at age nine in Raglan, New Zealand. "[Raglan] is the most amazing setup, there's four left-hand point breaks. The first is Manu Bay, it's the most accessible for anyone who visits Raglan. Then Boneyards is around the corner. Then Whale Bay is a beautiful spot with houses right on the point looking over the wave. Then Indicators and Outsides is where all the locals go to get away from the crowds at Manu Bay. All the waves have their own pros and cons, but all in all it's an amazing setup and I'm fortunate to call it home." (tracksmag.com.au, 16 Feb 2017, rnz.co.nz, 29 Dec 2019)

He was introduced to surfing by his father. "My dad used to take me down the beach after school, and ever since I stood up on my first wave I was just hooked from the start." (tracksmag.com.au, 16 Feb 2017; stuff.co.nz, 20 Jan 2017)

General
HOME BREAK
He grew up surfing in Raglan, New Zealand, and says it has contributed to his surfing backhand. "Raglan has been the best place in the world to grow up for my surfing. It's shaped my backhand into what it is now. I think in surfing it's harder to get a good backside then it is frontside. So being a natural-footer and going left everyday as a grommet has made me have a good backhand. Raglan has taught me how to read the wave really well, how to surf big and small." (tracksmag.com.au, 16 Feb 2017)

SMALLER STATURE
He believes his smaller stature is an advantage when surfing. "I think my small, short little legs and my small stature has been really beneficial for me because I've got a low centre of gravity, as a surfer you kind of want that, if you're tall and lanky and you land funny, you could tweak a knee or an ankle, but for me, I've been really fortunate with injuries and hopefully it stays that way. Usually some people are more heavy footed than others. For instance, they've got a bit more weight behind them on the front foot and [the boards] break or they crease and they have big pressure dents in the top of them. But like I said, I'm pretty lightweight, and I don't try and destroy my board. So they last a pretty long time, and usually most of us have about four or five backup boards on the beach, just in case anything happens in a heat." (rnz.co.nz, 29 Dec 2019)
