His father, Paul Gimson, has served as sailing secretary of Rudyard Lake Sailing Club. (macclesfield-express.co.uk, 30 Apr 2015)
:
In May 2015 he suffered a leg injury during the first race at the Delta Lloyd Regatta in the Netherlands. As his boat had to complete the next two days of racing to qualify for the World Cup in Weymouth, England the following month, he carried on before pulling out on the final day and flying home for treatment. After several weeks off, he returned to finish fifth overall at the World Cup in Weymouth. (Facebook page, 30 May 2015; southcoastjournalism.co.uk, 15 Jun 2015)

He began sailing in the GP14 class with his father at Redesmere Sailing Club in Macclesfield, England. He began racing in the National 12 class at Rudyard Lake Sailing Club in Leek, England. (britishsailingteam.rya.org.uk, 01 Jan 2016)
:
"For me [the Nacra class] has everything I would want an Olympic class to have. Knowing how to use your equipment and what settings to use is a big part of the challenge. The racing is also really good, but it's a hard enough boat to sail that you need the skills to sail the boat to be able to race. I think it has everything." (British Sailing Team YouTube channel, 21 May 2019)

NEW PARTNERSHIP FOR TOKYO
He first competed in the Nacra 17 boat in 2013 with Pippa Wilson, before her break from the sport in 2014. He then began sailing with Hannah Diamond in 2014, with the pair failing to realise their dream of competing at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, which he described as devastating. In late 2016 he began sailing with Anna Burnet. "She is better at multitasking and one of her biggest skills is that she's phenomenal at moving around the boat. A big reason why I sail with Anna is that she's very tough, very fit, very strong and quite injury-free. Out of all the people I've sailed with I'd definitely say she's the toughest person and when it gets hard on a four-race day she really can pull it together and keep going."
