Her uncle is New Zealand sailor Peter Blake, who won the 1989-1990 Round the World Race. (bbc.co.uk, 24 Jan 2020; helensburghadvertiser.co.uk, 01 Jan 2020)

She began sailing at age seven in Helensburgh, Scotland. She joined her local club and at age 11 she began sailing competitively. She competed in the 470 class for four years before switching to the Nacra 17 in 2016. "I grew up in the west of Scotland right next to the sea so I was always around water. My whole family have always been into sailing. My dad is a really keen sailor and when we were really young he bought us a little dingy and then [later] we joined in with local training." (stitcher.com, 03 Jun 2018; helensburghadvertiser.co.uk, 30 Apr 2018)

She also played tennis growing up, but decided to pursue a career in sailing as she felt she had a better chance at competing at the highest level in the sport. "I did as much tennis as I did sailing until I was about 11. I remember quite vividly that I didn't really like the cold, wet winters of Scotland. I was at a national level at sailing and only a county level at tennis so I thought if I was going to make it as an athlete then sailing would be the way to go." She supplements her fitness regime with weight training and cycling. "The Nacra 17 is a very physical boat so I have to do a lot of strength-based training." (British Sailing Team Facebook page, 23 Jun 2019; stitcher.com, 03 Jun 2018)

PARTNERSHIP
She spent four years in the 470 alongside Flora Stewart and had a brief stint in the 49erFX in 2015/16 before switching to Nacra 17 in late 2016. She partnered with John Gimson, who had been competing in the class since 2013. "I'd been sailing in a lot of the other Olympic classes but I didn't have a teammate and John asked me if I wanted to sail with him. It hadn't really been on my radar before but the opportunity to team up with John was really appealing because he's an amazing sailor. We've achieved a lot already and we get on really well. It was more about setting up a good team, it didn't really matter what the boat was. I'm quite lucky that it's a Nacra 17 because it's a fun boat, it's a fast boat. But since I teamed up with John to aim for Tokyo it's started to feel more like a realistic goal. The biggest thing is just to find the right team where you complement each other's skills. We're luckier than most that we get on well on and off the water."
