When he was young his parents bought his brother an Optimist. Burling was then encouraged to try sailing too. "I didn't really enjoy it that much until I got into the racing side of it. After that things happened pretty quickly. I really fell in love with the sport. I kept pushing from there and found I wasn't too bad at it."
