Her father Martin sailed internationally for Canada. He competed in the 470 class at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, and coached at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. Her partner Justin Barnes has also sailed at international level representing Canada, and won bronze in the 49er class at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. She took up the sport with her father at age six, and started sailing in the Optimist class at Kingston Yacht Club in Ontario, Canada, at age eight.
