He said he battled mental illness, including suicidal thoughts, following the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, where he and sailing partner Stephane Locus failed to win a medal in the 470. "It's the Olympics. It's the pinnacle of sport. It was not the best experience. We under-performed and lost confidence in ourselves right before the Olympics started. It was a hard pill to swallow. You're basically doing something for your entire life leading up to an event only to fail. There were lots of dark thoughts of suicide. How do you cope with being a failure? I never wanted to step foot in a sailboat again. I said I'm through, I'm done. The sport's killed me, wrecked me and ruined me financially and mentally.
